Susan Beech

Susan Beech is a paper artist who creates delicate crepe paper flowers and botanicals under the name A Petal Unfolds. Each masterly creation is intricately shaped by hand and then finished with ink, pastel and paint in her home studio in Hove.

Inspiration for her work stems from a childhood with a deep closeness and awe for nature, as well as an interest in contemporary floristry, art and fashion. This all feeds in to her pieces, bringing a vibrant sense of colour and a richness to the paper world she creates and has led to commercial projects with the National Trust, Jo Malone and Libertys amongst others.

On top of this she additionally teaches paper flower workshops both within the UK and internationally, as well as running popular online classes. Maybe it's time you put the scrolling on hold and explored a new creative foray?

What do you love most about your job?

I love earning a living through being creative, it’s always been my dream. I also really enjoy being my own boss and able to work flexibly when I need to.

Where's your favourite hangout?

I’m very lucky to live by the sea, so Hove seafront would have to be my favourite place. I love seeing the changes of colour in the sea, sky and horizon. It’s really inspiring.

What's top of your playlist right now?

A Rolling Stones song called Emotional Rescue. I found it through the film A Bigger Splash where Ralph Fiennes does a really fun dance scene to it.

What's your most loved piece in your wardrobe?

A floral quilted waistcoat. It goes with everything and always looks good.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Nowhere near as many as I would like! I’m quite good at wearing the same pairs of shoes for a long time until they’re pretty much unwearable. I’m so happy to add a pair of Frill Seekers to my collection, they’re really comfortable.

What do your Rogues say about you?

Practical, creative and original.
